Allen S. Bryan Sr. was the son of my sixth great grandparents Thomas Bryan Sr. and Elizabeth. As such, Allen was the brother of my fifth great grandfather Peter Bryan. This family bible is the most direct evidence that I'm aware of that Allen was the son of Thomas Bryan Sr. Allen's first wife Elizabeth Hubbard was surely related to Peter's wife Betty Hubbard, but what that relationship was is not known for sure. Elizabeth was the daughter of the famous Indian fighter Col. James Hubbard. James Hubbard and Peter Bryan were colleagues. James and Betty were probably not brother and sister. Perhaps they were first cousins. In any case, Peter Bryan was essentially a generation older than Allen Bryan even though they were brothers, and Betty Hubbard was essentially a generation older than Elizabeth Hubbard. |

tree braking (sic) off the top of a small pine which struck him in the breast.

number, possibly a 9, and is in different ink)

On the inside of the back cover is written:
Francis Elizabeth Bryan, daughter of Wm. M. & E.A.C. Bryan was born 17th day of
September 1844.

The reference to the Bryan graveyard is a reference to what is now called the Saffell Cemetery. It is also sometimes called the Old Bryan Cemetery to distinguish it from the Bryan-Drinnen-Cate Cemetery. The Saffell Cemetery is on a piece of beautiful river bottom land on the French Broad River. I believe the land was part of an original land grant owned by Allen S. Bryan Sr. |
