This information is from two sources: Jefferson County Cemeteries, Vol. II by David Templen and Cherel Henderson and Jefferson County Tombstone Records as transcribed by the WPA. In all cases, the notes were added by me.
Templin and Henderson list the cemetery as Mt. Zion. The WPA lists the cemetery as Schraders Chapel. The modern day name of the church is Mt. Zion. The church is on Goose Creek Road, and I generally have heard my family members refer to the church and to the cemetery as Goose Creek.

Dama Lee Bryan was the infant son of Frank M. Bryan and Stella Rickard. Frank M. Bryan in turn was the son of Silas A. Bryan and Amanda Melzina (Mandy) Slaton. Frank M. Bryan was the first cousin of my grandfather Emmert Oral Bryan as a Bryan and his second cousin as a Slaton. |

Anna Laura Cox was the daughter of John Franklin Cox and Mary Jane Slaton. Faye Gladys Cox was the daughter of James Harmon Cox and Ola Maud Cline. George Marion Cox was the son of John Franklin Cox and Mary Jane Slaton. James Harmon Cox and Ola Maud Cline were the parents of Robert Elmer (Elmer) Cox. John Franklin (Johnnie) Cox Jr. was the infant son of John Franklin Cox and Mary Jane Slaton. Ollie Elizabeth was their infant daughter. I don't know if Ollie Elizabeth's stone is mistranscribed as son of rather than daughter of, or if the stone itself is incorrect. Johnnie and Ollie were my father's first cousins as Coxes and his second cousins once removed as Slatons. Robert Elmer (Elmer) Cox was the son of James Harmon Cox and Ola Maud Cline. Ethel Cox was Lydia Ethel (Ethel) Bryan, daughter of my great grandparents William Harley (Harley) Bryan and Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison. Ethel and Elmer were not related, but I am related to both of them. Ethel Bryan was my grandfather's sister. Elmer Cox was my grandmother's first cousin. My grandmother died shortly after my father was born. The Coxes then raised my father until my grandfather remarried. I always treated them as a third set of grandparents. Lydia Ethel Bryan Cox died 19 June 1994. Roy Lee Cox was the son of William Nelson Cox and Mary Ella (Ella) Cline. His wife was Obie Lillian (Lillian) Howell. Mary Ella (Ella) Cline and Ola Maud Cline were sisters. William Nelson Cox was the brother of James Harmon Cox. A third brother (not buried here) was my great grandfather George Jackson Cox. George was the father of John Franklin Cox. William Nelson Cox, James Harmon Cox, and George Jackson Cox were sons of my second great grandfather John Tivis Cox of Greene County. John Tivis Cox moved from Greene County to Jefferson County, and was the common ancestor of many of the Coxes in Jefferson County. Joseph Porter (Port) Slaton was the son of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and Mary Anne Moore. Minnie Ann Cox was the daughter of my great grandparents George Jackson Cox and Clarissa Loretta (Retta or Rett) Nichols. As such, Minnie Ann Cox was the sister of my grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox, and was my father's Aunt Minnie. As Aunt Minnie's husband, Port Slaton was known to my father as Uncle Port. In addition, Port Slaton was my father's first cousin twice removed as a Slaton. |
