Ethel Polk age 46 was the wife of Edmund Clark Peters. The column in the census that indicates Ethel's marital status was marked through and overwritten and is very hard to read. It is very difficult to determine if she was enumerated as widowed or enumerated as married. In any case, the family was enumerated a second time in Augusta County, and in the second enumeration Edmund was listed as the head of household. It appears that the family was moving at the time of the census enumeration, and that Edmund was not with the family at the time of the enumeration in DeKalb County. Edmund Clark Peters was the son of Tobias C. Peters and Mary Jane Wright, the grandson of James Peters and Rachel McCart, and the great grandson of Tobias Peters Sr. and Elizabeth Rachel Scarbrough. Tobias Peters Sr. was one of two founders of the Peters family in Anderson County, Tennessee, along with my fifth great grandfather Henry Peters Sr. It seems likely that Tobias Sr. and Henry Sr. were brothers, but this has not been proven. Edmund and Ethel were missionaries to China. Their missionary work is reflected in the fact that their daughter Margaret was born in China. Jessie Love Smith age 52 was the widow of Absalom Barton (Barton) Peters at the time of the 1930 census, Barton having died in 1923. Barton Peters and Edmund Peters were brothers. Ethel Polk was the daughter of Thomas P. Polk and Jennie Camp. Margaret H. Polk age 70 was Thomas's sister. |
