Jacob Benton Cross was the son of Franklin W. (Frank) Cross and Virginia Florence Laymance. As such, Jacob was the great grandson of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War Drummer boy. Jacob's line was William -> Elijah -> Franklin W. (Frank) -> Jacob. I do not know who Nancy and Ben Branham were. However, Jacob Cross's stepfather was Jonathan Branham, so there was probably some connection between Jonathan Branham on the one hand and Nancy and Ben Branham on the other hand. |

Piney Langley age 18 married Jacob Benton Cross in 1883. Piney's given name was spelled numerous ways, including Pena, Peona, and Poeny. She was named for her grandmother Philopena Shoffner. Piney's full given name may well have been Philopena like her grandmother. This census entry suggests that Piney was the daughter of Isaac Langley and Philopena (Pena) Shoffner. Isaac had died before the 1880 census, and Pena Shoffner was enumerated as the widow Pena Langley age 55. However, I believe that Piney was the daughter of Rebecca Langley born out of wedlock, and that Isaac Langley and Pena Shoffner were Piney's grandparents. Piney was raised by Isaac and Pena in any case. This census entry is internally inconsistent in that the birth place of Wesley's mother is listed as Tennessee, when in fact in the very next line her birth place is listed as Indiana. So Wesley's birth places should have been listed as IN TN IN like the rest of his siblings. Jacob Benton Cross was the son of Franklin W. (Frank) Cross and Virginia Florence Laymance.
