This census entry was badly damaged and was very difficult to transcribe. I do not think it could be transcribed satisfactorily without knowledge of the family. For example, the only three letters of the surname that are really readable are "Sam". Charles Nelson Peters was the son of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith. As such, he was the brother of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters. Charles was an invalid and was not able to do manual labor. A number of censuses show his occupation as school teacher. It's interesting that he was still teaching at age 69. Cleophus Elijah Samsel Sr. age 52 was the son of James A. Samsel and Mary J. Peters. Mary was the brother of Charles Nelson Peters, and hence the census correctly identifies Charles as the uncle of Cleophus Elijah Samsel Sr. John W. Peters died in the Civil War and Ruby Smith died in 1869. Charles Nelson Peters was enumerated in the 1870 census in the home of James A. Samsel and Mary J. Peters. Charles was living independently as a boarder in 1880 census and he married in 1883. He seems to have come full circle in moving back in with the Samsel family after his wife died, albeit this time living with his nephew rather than with his brother-in-law.
