William Ruddle age 56 was the son of John Ruddle and Deborah Bryan and the grandson my sixth great grandparents Thomas Bryan Sr. and Elizabeth.  As such, William was the nephew of my fifth great grandfather Peter Bryan and the first cousin of my fourth great grandfather Thomas C. Bryan Sr.  William was born about 1797, and his correct age at the time of the 1850 census was closer to 53 than to 46.

In addition to being Peter Bryan's brother-in-law, John Ruddle was a member of Zachariah Cox's unsuccessful expedition to take possession of the Muscle Shoals land grant, along with Peter and with Col. James Hubbard.  That means that John and Deborah must have moved from Rockingham County, Virginia to what is now Sevier County, Tennessee by about 1790, probably at the same time that Peter Bryan himself moved to Tennessee.
