There are records with Cynthia's given name spelled various ways, including Syntha, Sintha, Sinthy, and Cyntha. She was Syntha Cross, daughter of Brittain Cross and Mary Parks. She was born in Anderson County, Tennessee. She married James Monroe Tunnell 2 Jul 1840 in Anderson County, Tennessee. The proof that she was the daughter of Brittain Cross is an entry in the minutes of the Anderson County Court (pp.147-149, Feb 1845 - Mar 1850) where she was described as a minor Legatee of Brittain Cross, and where Alfred Cross was assigned as her guardian. Alfred Cross himself was a son of Brittain Cross and Mary Parks, and was therefore Syntha's older brother. Brittain Cross had died fairly young (in 1826), and Syntha Cross owned 160 acres in Anderson County in her own name, but as a minor with Alfred Cross as guardian (Anderson County taxes: Sinthy Cross in 1838, Syntha Cross in 1839, Cyntha Cross in 1840, and Cyntha Cross by Alfred Cross in 1841). Her son William's age of 9 and birth place of Missouri suggests that the family moved to Missouri shortly after James and Syntha were married in 1840. James Monroe Tunnell died 3 Jul 1850 in Hartsville, Wright County, Missouri. So he died after the official enumeration date of 1 June 1850, but before the enumerator knocked on the door in September. Under these circumstances, it's somewhat surprising that the enumerator got it right, and did list James. Syntha herself died in 1865. The couple actually had five children, two of whom were not enumerated in the 1850 census. Mary E. Tunnell was born in 1843 and died in 1844. Dorthula Tunnell was born 25 Oct 1850, both after her father died and after the census enumeration. |
