John Bortles age 40-49 was the son of Christian Bortles and Anna Catherine Anthony. Christian Bortles and Anna Catherine Anthony were probably my fifth great grandparents because Christian listed Jacob England as his grandson in his will, and Jacob England of Burke County, North Carolina was my third great grandfather. That raises the interesting possibility that John Bortles was my fourth great grandfather. There were no England-Bortles marriages in Burke County. There was a bastardy bond in 1827 for Rachel England. So perhaps John Bortles was Jacob England's father and Rachel England was Jacob's mother. |

It is very likely that Christian Bortles age 70-79 was my fifth great grandfather. According to his will, he had a grandson named Jacob England. My third great grandfather of Burke County, North Carolina was Jacob England. I have found no other Jacob England in Burke County, and the ages work out so that Christian Bortles' grandson could have been my Jacob England. At the present time, it seems more likely that Jacob was born out of wedlock, the son of an England woman and a Bortles man than that he was the legitimate son of an England man and a Bortles woman. |
