1790 Census, Chatham County, North Carolina

The only extant copy of the 1790 Chatham County census was copied from the original in alphabetic order.  Hence, it is not possible to draw any conclusions about who was living close to whom.

There are supposed to be five columns of data for the 1790 census: 1) number of free white males age 16 or older, 2) number of free white males less than 16 years old, 3) number of free white females, 4) number of other free persons, and 5) number of slaves.  In Chatham County, the enumerator added a sixth column which is simply the sum of the other five columns.

p.88, Presley Gregory   212049

     males >= 16 bef. 1774  2    Presley George
     males  < 16 1775-1790  1
     females                2
     other free             0
     slaves                 4
     total                  9

There seems little doubt that this was Presley George.  Deeds say that there was a Presley George in the county, but there is no other record of a Presley Gregory.  The name was undoubtedly copied incorrectly when the list was alphabetized.  This Presley George was born about 1750, and the George's from Chatham County removed to Sumner County, Tennessee.

My interest in Presley George is that my third great grandmother was Rebecca Frances George who married Thomas Fielden Slaton.  I suspect rather strongly that Rebecca Frances George was the daughter of a Presley George.  Even if my guess is correct, Rebecca's father would not have been this Presley George.  It would have been a Presley George about one generation later.  Rebecca was born in 1816 in North Carolina, possibly in Stokes County.  Whether her father was Presley George or some other George, he would have had to be living in North Carolina in 1816.

p.88, Isaac George  121015

     males >= 16 bef. 1774   1    Isaac George
     males  < 16 1775-1790   2
     females                 1
     other free              0
     slaves                  1
     total                   5

This Isaac George was probably related to Joseph George b. about 1769 and to Presley George b. about 1750.

p.88, Joseph George  100001

     males >= 16 bef. 1774   1    Joseph George
     males  < 16 1775-1790   0
     females                 0
     other free              0
     slaves                  0
     total                   1

This Joseph George was b. about 1769, and was possibly the son of Presley George b. about 1750.
