The name may be Fielding Slaten.  I am looking at this person as a possible member of my Slaton family for whom my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton might have been named.

The 1830 census entry looks more like Slater than Slaten, although it could be either.  However, I have the following additional data:

The Journal of The Genealogical Society of Rowan County, North Carolina. Volume 17, number 4, 2003. This is information taken from the Rowan County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions - May 1826. Thursday 18th May Session 1826 William B. Willson and Feilding Slaton were appointed Coroners whereupon the said William B. Willson gave bond with Abrahan R. Jones and Henry Keller his securites in the penalty of two thousand Dollars - And the said Feilding Slaton gave bond with (nothing more).

So perhaps the correct spelling really was Slaten or Slaton rather than Slater.  If Fielding Slaten was a member of my Slaton family, it would be hoped that he was the son of William Slayden and Nancy Shelton, and the brother of William Slaydon who married Susannah Flippin.  That way, my Thomas Fielden Slaton could have been named for his uncle Fielding Slaten.  The contrary view is that most of the records for the family in this time frame were in Pittsylvania County, Virginia rather than in North Carolina.  However, Pittsylvania County is located next to the North Carolina state line.
