Stokes County, North Carolina, 1860, Danbury PO
p.117b, dwelling number 458, family number 458
George Presley Sr. 82 m w farmer $2500/$11000 VA
        Mary 77 f w NC
        Mary Francis 28 f w NC

Presley George Sr. age 82 and Mary Cook age 77 may have been the parents of my third great grandmother Rebecca Frances George who married Thomas Fielden Slaton.

The evidence is suggestive rather than being definitive.  Rebecca and Thomas were married in Stokes County, but we don't know for sure if Rebecca was born in Stokes County.  She was not listed in Presley's will, but that does not mean definitively that she was not his daughter.  She moved to Tennessee and the rest of Presley's children remained in North Carolina.  She may have received her inheritence at the time of her marriage or at the time she moved to Tennessee.  In either case, she likely would not have been listed in the will.

The suggestive evidence is as follows.  Susan A. Slaton was the daughter of Thomas Fielden Slaton and Rebecca Francis GeorgeSusan married Joseph HarrisonSusan and Joseph seem to have named most of their children after ancestors.

  • Mary Francis Harrison was apparently named for her two grandmothers Rhoda Maria Brown and Rebecca Frances George.
  • Rhoda Rebecca (Becky) Harrison was apparently named for her two grandmothers Rhoda Maria Brown and Rebecca Frances George.
  • John David Harrison was apparently named for his uncle John Harrison and for his great grandfather David Harrison.
  • Lydia Catherine Harrison was apparently named for for her grandaunt Catherine Harrison.
  • Thomas Slaton Harrison was apparently named for for his grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton.
  • Daniel (Dan) Harrison was apparently named for for his grandfather Daniel Harrison.
  • William Alexander Harrison was apparently named for for his great grandfather William Slaydon.
  • Presley George Harrison was apparently named for a man named Presley George.  And that would suggest that Presley George Sr. was Presley George Harrison's great grandfather and therefore that Presley George Sr. was Rebecca Frances George's father.  Presley George Sr. had a son named Presley George Jr.  If Rebecca Frances George was the daughter of Presley George Sr., then Presley George Jr. was Rebecca's brother.  So Presley George Harrison could have been named either for his granduncle Presley George Jr. or for his great grandfather Presley George Sr..

In addition, Thomas Fielden Slaton and Rebecca Frances George were married in 1840 in Stokes County, North Carolina.  Thomas's parents were living very close to Presley George Sr. in 1840.  There were a few other George families in Stokes County at the same time.  But none of the others were living close to Thomas's parents, and none of the heads of households from the other George were of the right ages to have been Rebecca's parents.

I do not know who Mary Francis George age 28 was.  She must have been a granddaughter.  As a granddaughter or not, it's also possible that her name was Mary Francis.  It's very difficult from the census image to determine if Francis was intended as a middle name or as a surname.

George Reubin 38 m w farmer $500/$300 NC

        Mary 2 f w NC

Reuben George age 38 was the son of my fourth great grandparents Presley George Sr. and Mary Cook who were in dwelling number 458 next door.  As such, Reuben was the brother of my third great grandmother Rebecca Frances George.  Reuben was named for his grandfather Reuben George.

Reuben's wife was Ruth Celia (Celia) Owens age 38.

The birth places are all inferred.  The enumerator left the birth place blank for those individuals who were born in North Carolina.

        Robert 12 m w NC

Presley George Jr. age 45 was the son of Presley George Sr. and Mary Cook.  Assuming that Presley George Sr. was my fourth great grandfather, then Presley George Jr. would have been the brother of my third great grandmother Rebecca Frances George.

Ruth Flynt age 43 was Presley's second wife.  Robert age 12 was the son of Presley and his first wife Martha Jane Flippin.

The birth places are all inferred.  The enumerator left the birth place blank for those individuals who were born in North Carolina.
