James Harvey Cox Jr. was the son of James Harvey Cox Sr. and Rachel Douglass. Despite what this census entry says, I am not persuaded that Rachel was born in England. I think it's more likely that she was born in Tennessee. James Harvey Cox Sr. was the son of William Cox and the grandson of Matthew Cox. Over several generations, this Cox family moved from North Carolina to Greene County, Tennessee to Jefferson County, Tennessee. I am descended from Reuben Cox, and over several generations my Cox family moved from Wilkes County, North Carolina to Greene County, Tennessee to Jefferson County, Tennessee. It seems likely that the two families were related. For example, my Reuben Cox might have been the first cousin or the nephew of William Cox from the "other" Cox line. But nothing is really proven in this regard. |
