** Marshall Oscar Mathis's father was born in Switzerland,
and Marshall himself spoke French.

I chased down this census entry because of Elmer Peters age 25.  William Elmer (Elmer) Peters of Anderson County, Tennessee was the son of Robert A. Peters and Mollie I. Cole.  Robert A. Peters was the son of my second great grandparents John Henry Peters and Hulda Asberine (Huldy or Asby) Cross.  As such, Robert was the brother of my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters.  Mollie I. Cole was the daughter of my second great grandparents William Cole and Vesta Clay England.  As such, Mollie was the sister of my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole who married Alva Edward Peters.  So Elmer Peters was the double first cousin of my grandfather Ernest Lester (Lester) Peters.

The other Tennesseans in this census entry had Anderson County and/or Morgan County roots.

Marshall Oscar Mathis was the son of Peter Leonard Mathis and Louisa Laymance.  So Leonard Mathis age 19 and Louise Mathis age 21 were almost certainly named for their grandparents.  My connection to the Mathis family is that Louisa Laymance married first Jacob Benton Cross.  Jacob Benton Cross was the grandson of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  I'm not sure who Lee Cross was nor how he fits into the family.  Peter Garland (Pete) Mathis age 20 was the son of John Martin Mathis and Vesta Alice Goddard.  John Martin Mathis was the brother of Marshall Oscar Mathis.
