Joseph Haskel (Haskel) Free was from Jefferson County, Tennessee. He married first Rebecca Slaton in 1894. Rebecca was the daughter of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and Mary Anne Moore. As such, Rebecca was the niece of my second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton. Rebecca died in 1902. The children of Haskel and Rebecca were then raised by Rebecca's parents, and Haskel "went west". His migration first followed that of Rebecca's brother John Thomas Slaton who moved to Holtville, Imperial County, California. John Thomas Slaton remained in California, and Haskel Free had moved to Oregon by the time of the 1920 census. |
