The Peters family in Anderson County was founded in 1797 by Henry Peters Sr. and Tobias Peters Sr. Tobias seems to be better known than Henry. I am not descended from Tobias. I am descended from two of Henry's sons, namely Thomas Peters and Henry Peters Jr.

| 9 | Peters | Mrs. H. A. | 122/$150 | Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross was the daughter of Alfred Carter Cross and Zipporah Peters. In 1896, Asberine was the widow of John H. Peters. It is difficult to determine where she may have obtained the financial resources to purchase 122 acres. The family lived in great poverty, and there is no indication that John H. Peters ever owned any land. Asberine did file for a widow's pension based on John's service in the Civil War. John died in 1890, and Asberine filed for her widow's pension in the same year. So the year of her pension does not correspond precisely with the date in which she purchased the land.

| 9 | Peters | P. A. | 2 | The best I can tell, there was no P. A. Peters. My best guess is that this was Robert Asbury Peters and he should have been recorded as R. A. Peters rather than as P. A. Peters. Robert was the brother of my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters. Just as I don't understand why Alva would have paid two polls, I don't understand why Robert would have paid two polls.

| 9 | Peters | Mrs. A. J. (or H. J.) | 122/$150 | Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross was the daughter of Alfred Carter Cross and Zipporah Peters. The tax collector didn't list her initials quite right in 1899. At this point, Asberine was the widow of John H. 1899 | 9 | Peters | S. W. | 2 | This one is a little strange. The 1900 tax list had a J. W. Peters, and Alva had a brother named John W. Peters. John W. Peters was born in 1877 and was enumerated in the 1900 census in Alva's household in Dist. 9. There was no S. W. Peters, so this entry was probably for J. W. Peters. John died in December 1900, so the 1899 and 1900 tax lists were the only lists on which he appeared.

| 9 | Peters | Mrs. H. A. | 125/$250 | Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross was the daughter of Alfred Carter Cross and Zipporah Peters. In 1900, Asberine was the widow of John H. Peters. In all previous years, she owned 122 acres rather than 125 acres. I don't know if she added 3 acres to her holdings, or if there was a mistake in the tax book. It is difficult to determine where she may have obtained the financial resources to purchase 122 acres. The family lived in great poverty, and there is no indication that John H.
