WWI Veterans, Anderson County, Tennessee (ages as of 1917)

Peters Elmer 23 Edgemoor, Anderson County, Tennessee

This appears to have been Elmer Peters (middle initial not known), son of Robert A. Peters and Mollie I. Cole.  As such, he was the double first cousin of my grandfather Ernest Lester (Lester) Peters Sr.  I have a couple of other Elmer Peters in my data base who are close to being the right age, but this is the Elmer who is a perfect fit, both in age and in location (my Peters family lived in the Scarbrough community but had an Edgemoor postal address at the time of WWI.)

Peters Henry H. 27 Oliver Springs, Roane County, Tennessee

Henry Hutzel (Hutzel) Peters was the much younger brother of my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters.  Hutzel never married, and he died in 1920 at the age of 30.  He died of typhoid fever.

I'm a little puzzled by the Oliver Springs address.  Oliver Springs is very close to the Scarbrough community in Anderson County where my Peters family lived.  But records I have found up to now suggest that Hutzel had never moved out on his own, and indeed he was living with his brother Alva when he (Hutzel) died.  Based on these WWI records, I think I must be wrong, and that Hutzel did move out on his own, at least for a while.  Hutzel was born 4 Mar 1890 in Anderson County, Tennessee and died 25 Mar 1920 in Anderson County, Tennessee.

Hutzel was one of fourteen brothers and sisters, only four of whom lived to be adults.  William Daily (Will) Peters, Alva Edward Peters, and Robert A. Peters married and had children, but as I said Hutzel never married.  Robert died in 1905.  So when Hutzel died in 1920, his estate was split between his surviving brothers Will and Alva.  Hutzel's estate was worth $2761.02 (mostly cash in the bank), which seems to me like a pretty good sum for 1920.  He owned no land, so he must have just worked and saved.

My grandfather Lester Peters was reputed to have looked just like his Uncle Hutzel, and they were close to the same age.  Hutzel owned a fiddle that was passed down to Lester, and Lester played it at dances.  Hutzel's fiddle is presently in the possession of my sister.

Peters Timothy C. 21 Clinton, Anderson County, Tennessee
Peters Walter M. 25 Clinton, Anderson County, Tennessee
