1783 Tax List, Greene County, Tennessee

Greene County was created from Washington County in 1783, so this is the first Greene County tax list. In 1783, Greene County included land that is in modern day Jefferson, Knox, and Sevier Counties, among others.  So someone's presence in Greene County in 1783 does not necessarily imply that their land was in modern day Greene County.

The reference for this data is Tax List for Greene County State of Tennessee, for the Year 1783 by Louise Wilson Reynolds, pp.196-203 V53, DAR Magazine, April 1919.

no Crosses
Henry Cross and Britton Cross were in Greene County by 1805, probably earlier.

no Pierces
At this point in my research, I do not know when the first Pierces arrrived in Greene County.

Hubbard, Samuel
Hubbard, James
Hubbard, William
In 1783, James Hubbard who murdered the old Cherokee Chief "Old Corntussell" received 2000 acres on the Tennessee River in Greene County.

I wonder if this is the same Col. James Hubbard who was a colleague of Peter Bryan.  I also wonder if the 2000 acres were in what is modern day Sevier County.

The designation "Tennessee River" is somewhat artificial.  The exact location where the name of the river changes from the Holston River to the Tennessee River has changed numerous times throughout history.  In modern times, the name of the river changes at Knoxville, where the Holston River and the French Broad River are considered to join together to form the Tennessee River.  But I don't know for sure where the name of the river changed from Holston to Tennessee in 1783.  (RGB))

Bryant, Bryan
Bryant, John
Bryant, Thomas
I don't know if any of these are mine.  If so, they were in Tennessee before Peter Bryan, who moved from Virginia to what is now Sevier County, Tennessee in 1790.
