Daniel (Dan) Harrison age 46 was the son of my second great grandparents Joseph Harrison and Susan A. Slaton. As such, Uncle Dan was the brother of my great grandmother Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison. The birthplaces of Uncle Dan's parents were incorrect in this census entry. They should have read TN VA NC. Mary Emily Ethel (Ethel) Cox age 37 was the daughter of my great grandparents George Jackson Cox and Clarissa Loretta (Rett) Nichols. As such, Aunt Ethel was the sister of my grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox. Aunt Ethel was actually married at the age of 13 rather than at the age of 15 as shown in this census entry. In marrying so young, she was only following family tradition because her mother Rett Nichols had married at the age of 12. |

Omer Jenkins married Lela Bray on 22 Oct 1927 in Loudon County. I believe the Omer W. Jenkins age 26 from this census entry was the same Omer Jenkins that married Lela Bray, but it is difficult to know for sure. At the time of the 1930 census, Lela was a patient at the Beverly Sanatorium on Tazewell Pike in Knox County. The Beverly Sanatorium was later called the East Tennessee Tuberculosis Hospital and later still the East Tennessee Chest Disease Hospital. So Lela Bray was hospitalized for the treatment for tuberculosis at the time of the 1930 census. Such hospitalizations often lasted a year or two. Lela was enumerated as married in 1930. I don't know why Omer was enumerated as single. It's possible this is the wrong Omer Jenkins. It's possible that Lela and Omer were divorced before the 1930 census. It's possible that they were still married but that the enumerator made an error. In any case, the Omer Jenkins who was living in Hamblen County married Pauline McKinney on 13 Sep 1930 in Hamblen County. Further research is required to clarify this situation. Lela was the daughter of Robert Henry (Henry) Bray and Maude Elizabeth Hinds, and the granddaughter of my second great grandparents Joseph A. (Joe) Bray and Ferriba Salina (Salina) Moore. As such, Uncle Henry was the brother of my great grandmother Mary Mahala Jane (Mahala or Haley) Bray, and Lela Bray was the first cousin of my grandmother Lola Ethel Williamson. |
