Nancy Elizabeth Jane Newman age 66 was the daughter of Jared Campbell Newman and Mary (Polly) Bryan. Polly Bryan was the daughter of my fourth great grandparents Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate. As such, Polly was the sister of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan. In 1900, Nancy was the widow of Hugh A. Henry. I have not been able to identify who this particular Hugh Henry was. Henry was a prominent surname in Jefferson County and Sevier County, and Major Hugh Henry was one of the founders of the family in the area. Hugh and Nancy moved from Jefferson County to McMinn County between 1860 and 1870, from McMinn County to Polk County between 1870 and 1880, and from Polk County to Hamilton County between 1800 and 1900. The statement that Nancy had borne two children with two still living was in error. She had borne four children. One died as an infant. Two sons were living with her in 1990. The fourth child was a daughter Louisa. I don't know if Louisa was living at the time of the 1900 census or not. |
