1861 Tax List, Jefferson County, Tennessee

Dist. 1
  Slayton, Thomas 1 poll
  Slayton, Wm. 1 poll

Dist. 2
  Slaydon, Joseph 1 poll
  Slaydon, Wilker 1 poll

Thomas Fielden Slaton, Joseph Flippin Slaton, Wilcher C. Slaton, and William J. Slaton were brothers, sons of William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin.  Wm. Slayton from District 1 was either the elder William Slaydon himself, or else was William J. Slaton.

It seems to me more likely that William Slayton from District 1 was William J. Slaton, age 32 in 1861 than that he was the elder William Slaydon.  Polls in Tennessee at this time were supposed to be paid by free white males age 21 through 50.  The elder William Slaydon should have been exempt from paying a poll due to his age of 69.

The same four Slatons appeared in the 1861 special census for Jefferson County, except that William was in District 2 in the special census and in District 1 in the tax list.  I don't know if both Williams were the same, or if one of them was the father and the other one was the son.  I suspect that in both cases William was the son.

It should be pointed out than in accord with Sherlock Holme's famous observation, the dog did not bark.  Which is to say, none of the four men paid taxes on land.  I do not believe any of them owned any land at this time.
