My Cox family moved from Wilkes County, North Carolina to East Tennessee in the 1850's. John Tivis Cox was enumerated in Greene County, Tennessee in 1840 through 1880. He was enumerated in Jefferson County, Tennessee in 1900. He married Nancy Ann Pierce in 1860 in Greene County. They were my second great grandparents. John Tivis Cox married second Martha P. Reneau in 1882 in Jefferson County. Martha and her first husband John H. B. Nichols also were my second great grandparents.

1 | James M. Cox was the son of Harmon Cox and Sarah Bull. But that's not much help in fitting James into the family. Harmon was born about 1821 in Tennessee (probably Grainger County), and my Coxes did not arrive in Greene County, Tennessee until after 1830. However, there are many Harmon Coxes in my Cox family. So it seems somewhat likely that the two families were related. |
