Jefferson County, Tennessee, deadend from the 1830 census
Joseph C. Cross
Joseph C. Cross appeared
in the 1830 Jefferson County census with
his wife. Joseph cannot be located in
1840 nor any any subsequent census.
He would have been age 60-69 in 1840.
There is some conflicting evidence
as to what was going on.
Joseph Cross married Mary (Polly) Hoskins in
Jefferson County on 3 Jan 1803. Joseph Cross
purchased 250 acres
on Cane Creek in Anderson
County on 1 Jul 1803. On 14 Sep 1804, the Anderson County
court received an inventory of the estate of
Joseph Cross deceased from the adminstrix of the estate.
In 1806, Polly Cross paid taxes on 250 acres on Cane Creek
in Anderson County. This would suggest that the Joseph
Cross who married
Mary (Polly) Hoskins died in 1804. But the
1830 census lists Joseph C. Cross age 50-59 and his wife
age 40-49 who were probably the correct age to have been
Joseph Cross and
Mary (Polly) Hoskins. Therefore,
there must have been two Joseph Crosses in Jefferson County,
one who purchased 250 acres in Anderson County in 1803 and died in 1804,
and the other who was enumerated in the 1830 census. I don't know
for sure which one married Mary (Polly) Hoskins.
