William J. Slaton was the son of my fourth great grandparents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. As such, he was the brother of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton. This deed bears on the date of death of William J. Slaton. He was enumerated in the 1880 census. I have found no will, settlement, family bible, or tombstone that would give his date of death. Based on this deed, he died before 13 Sep 1889. I would suspect that he died much closer to 1889 than to 1880, probably in 1889 itself. William J. Slaton's wife was Priscilla Emeline (Emeline) Sellers, and his two children were Samuel H. (Sam) Slaton and Susan L. (Susie) Slaton. The land in this deed was sold by William's widow and his two children. Sam Slaton's wife was Edna Viola (Viola) Workman. |

I don't know the story of this transaction, but it seems likely it has something to do with the estate of William Slaydon. Taking the names slightly out of order, Thomas Fielden Slaton, Wilcher C. Slaton, and Mahala B. Slaton were children of William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. Susan (Susie) Slaton was the daughter of William J. Slaton and the granddaughter of William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. Samuel H. (Sam) Slaton was the son of William J. Slaton and the grandson of William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. William J. Slaton himself had died at least ten years prior to the execution of this deed, which is why his children Susie and Sam were involved with the deed. W. C. is a mystery. The only W. C. Slaton I have in my data base is Wilcher C. Slaton, but he is already in the list as "Wilsher". The Joseph Harrison to whom the land was being sold was the husband of Susan A. Slaton who was the daughter of Thomas Fielden Slaton, so the land was being kept in the family. Joseph Harrison and Susan A. Slaton were my second great grandparents. |

This deed does not seem to contain any information of genealogical value to the Slaton family. William P. Slaton was the son of Thomas Fielden Slaton and Rebecca Frances George. William' wife was Rachel Swann. I do not know, nor have researched very extensively, who Rachel's parents were. She was obviously related to the other Swann family members named in this deed, but I do not know what the exact relationship was. |

The surname Bryan is misspelled as Bryant throughout this deed. Such a misspelling is very common because there are many more people with the surname Bryant than with the surname Bryan. We Bryan's are pretty used to it. This was the second of two parcels of land that were purchased in Jefferson County by Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison subsequent to the death of her husband William Harley (Harley) Bryan on 15 Dec 1915. See above for further discussion of Nannie Bryan's first deed in Jefferson County. For the purposes of the discussion of this deed, it's important to remember that Nannie was the daughter of Joseph Harrison and Susan A. Slaton. This particular parcel was sold at public auction as the result of a a court case J. D Harrison et.al. vs. Eunice Allen. John David Harrison was Nannie's brother. Mary Eunice (Eunice) Allen was Nannie's niece, with Eunice having been the daughter of Nannie's sister Lydia Catherine Harrison and Lydia's husband William A. Allen. This parcel was purchased at auction by Joseph Porter (Port) Slaton who then assigned his bid to Nannie Bryan. Port Slaton was Nannie's first cousin, having been the son of Nannie's uncle, Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton. So the transaction was all in the family. And the family connection gets stronger. The same parcel was purchased originally by Nannie's father Joseph Harrison in 1901, and Joseph had purchased the parcel from Wilcher C. Slaton who was the uncle of Nannie's mother Susan A. Slaton. Further research will be required to determine how the property passed from Joseph Harrison to Eunice Allen, and the nature of the dispute between Eunice Allen and the other family members. |

Rufus A. Bryan was the son of William Enyard Bryan and Amanda Keener and the grandson of my fourth great grandparents Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate. As such, Rufus was the nephew of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan and the first cousin of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan. Rufus was from Sevier County. He married Martha Cordelia (Cordie) Elder in Sevier County on 10 Jan 1880. Rufus's purchase of land in Jefferson County appears related to the presence of other members of the Elder family in Jefferson County. The Riley Elder whose property was adjacent to Rufus's property was Cordie's uncle. |
