Brittain Cross was on the 1805 Greene County, Tennessee tax list, and he had moved to Anderson County, Tennessee by 1808. I wonder if Joseph was his brother. Brittain was the founder of one of two Cross families in Anderson County. The other Cross family in Anderson County was founded by my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy. William and Brittain were surely related, and it is an ongoing question of how they might have been related. Goodspeed says that William was Brittain's father, but I tend to believe that they were less closely related than that. |

Joseph Flippin Slaton was the son of my fourth great grandparents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. As such, he was the brother of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton. Mary Elizabeth Bell was the daughter of Uriah Bell and Margaret Hays. I believe the correct spelling for the bondsman's name was John Lanning, but that does not help to identify how he was related to the family. |

Leah Slaton used to be a mysterious brick wall in Jefferson County, Tennessee. She has now been proven to have been the daughter of Joseph Flippin Slaton and Mary Elizabeth Bell. The major complicating factor in researching Leah was that her mother Mary Elizabeth Bell married Aaron M. Shurbutt after Joseph Flippin Slaton died, and the next census entry for the family listed the surname of Joseph Flippin Slaton's children as Shurbutt rather than as Slaton. I left Leah's third marriage in the list for completeness, even though it was in Knox County. |

Willie Josephine (Bill) Bryan was the sister of my grandfather Emmert Oral Bryan. She was known to me as Aunt Bill. She married William Frank (Frank) Kyle. I believe Mabel Bryan was Sallie Mabel (Mabel) Bryan, daughter of Thomas Allen (Allen) Bryan and Ida Bell Cate. She married Jack Wolfe and they had a son named Virgil Bryan Wolfe. So I am guessing that Jack Wolfe was Virgil Jack Wolfe. |

Some (perhaps most?) of these Bryants were really Bryans. For example, Ethel Bryant who married Elmer Cox was Lydia Ethel (Ethel) Bryan, and she was my grandfather's sister. They eloped, didn't tell anybody they were married, and continued to live with their respective parents for a short time until people started figuring it out. |

Sherbett marriages have to do with research into the mysterious Leah Slaton who was born in 1863, believed to be the daughter of Joseph Flippin Slaton and Mary Elizabeth A. Bell. Joseph Flippin Slaton was the brother of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton. The current theory is that Joseph Flippin Slaton died between 1860 and 1870, and that Mary Elizabeth A. Bell married Aaron M. Sherbett before 1870. There was a Leah S. Sherbett enumerated with the Aaron M. Sherbett family in the 1870 census. The wife in the family was listed as M.E. Sherbett. Leah's age and M.E.'s age were correct to be Leah Slaton and Mary Elizabeth A. Bell, respectively. Also, there were Slatons living nearby. W.S. Sherbett who married Amanda Manning was almost certainly the son of Aaron M. Sherbett. One or more of the Sherbett women listed above may have been Aaron's daughters. Finding one of their death certificates might settle the issue of whether M.E. Sherbett in the 180 census was in fact Mary Elizabeth A. Bell. |
