My Slaton family moved from North Carolina to Jefferson County, Tennessee in the 1850's. My third great grandparents Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George arrived in Tennessee shortly before the 1850 census. Tom's parents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin arrived in Tennessee prior to the 1860 census, as did many of Tom's siblings.

1875 | 2 | Slayden | F. M. | 1 | Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton, son of Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George. Frank was 32 years old, and hence he should have paid a poll. I don't know why he didn't.
1875 | 2 | Slayden | W. C. | 1 | 1 | Wilcher C. (Buck) Slaton, son of Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George. However, something is clearly wrong here. Wilcher was listed separately with his full given name. I wonder if "W. C." and "Welcher were duplicate entries, or if "W. C." was somebody else.
1875 | 2 | Shurbutt | A. M. | S. E. Gass | Fain & Mitchell | Mitchell | Mitchell | 50 | 2 | Aaron M. Shurbutt married Mary Elizabeth Bell. Mary married first Joseph F. Slaton. So Aaron's children were half brothers and sisters with the children of Joseph F. Slaton.
1875 | 2 | Slayden | William | 1 | I don't know which William Slaton this one was.
1875 | 2 | Slaydon | Welcher | 1 | Wilcher C. (Buck) Slaton, son of Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George.
1875 | 2 | Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton himself did not appear on the tax roles in 1875. At 59 years old, he was too old to pay a poll, and he apparently did not own any land. Also, Tom's father William Slaydon probably did not appear on the 1875 tax rolls for the same reasons, unless the William with the dog was him.

1881 | 2 | Slayden | Welsher | Swann & Fain | 20 | 1 | Wilcher C. (Buck) Slaton, son of Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George. Wilcher was enumerated in Sevier County in the 1880 census.
1881 | 2 | Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton himself did not appear on the tax roles in 1881. At 63 years old, he was too old to pay a poll, and he apparently did not own any land. Also, Tom's father William Slaydon did not appear on the 1881 tax rolls for the same reasons, plus William may have died between the 1880 census and the 1881 tax roll.

1882 | 2 | Slaydon | Wm. | Woods | Mitchell | Sherbett | Mills | 3 | This tax entry is hard to understand. If it was William P. (Will) Slaton (see 1881 entry), Then we have to explain why it went from 50 acres to 3, and from 1 poll to 0 polls. On the other hand, it's hard to see what other William Slaton this would have been.
1882 | 2 | Sherbett | Aaron | Swann & Fain | Moore | Wells & Slaydon | 50 | Aaron M. Shurbutt married Mary Elizabeth Bell. Mary married first Joseph F. Slaton. So Aaron's children were half brothers and sisters with the children of Joseph F. Slaton.
1882 | 2 | Slayden | Thomas | Wells | Goforth | Vandike | 100 | Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton, son of William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. 1882 appears to be the first time that Tom owned any land. This might suggest that his father William Slaydon died in 1882, and that the 100 acres was somehow related to Tom's inheritance from his father. There is no indication that William owned any land, but perhaps there was some money in the inheritance.

1895 | 2 | Harrison | Joseph | Moree | Wells | Slaton | Moree | 53 | Joseph Harrison married Susan A. Slaton, daughter of Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George, in 1872. I believe that Joseph Harrison's land might have been part of 133 acres that had been owned by Tom Slaton. However, the 53 acres owned by Joseph Harrison in 1895 doesn't fit this theory as well as the 33 acres in 1896 (see below).

1896 | 2 | Harrison | Joseph | Morie | Wells | Slaton | Morrie | 33 | Joseph Harrison married Susan A. Slaton, daughter of Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George, in 1872. I believe that Joseph Harrison's 33 acres were part of 133 acres that had been owned by Tom Slaton. The 33 acres apparently passed into the possession of Joseph Harrison several years after his marriage, so they would not have been a dowry for Susan A. Slaton.

1898 | 2 | Slaton | F. M. | Williams | Wells | Morie | Sherbett | 100 | Frances Marion (Frank) Slaton, son of Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George. Tom Slaton died in 1898, and it appears that his son Frank inherited Tom's land. Tom's land was 133 acres at one point, but it had been reduced to 100 acres at the time of his death.

1898 | 2 | Harrison | Joseph | Slaton | Morie | Wells | Morie | 30 | Joseph Harrison married Susan A. Slaton, daughter of Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George, in 1872. I believe that Joseph Harrison's 30 acres were part of 133 acres that had been owned by Tom Slaton. The 30 acres apparently passed into the possession of Joseph Harrison several years after his marriage, so they would not have been a dowry for Susan A. Slaton.
1898 | 2 | Harrison | Joseph | Sherbett | Morie | Morie | Morie | 4 | Joseph Harrison married Susan A. Slaton, daughter of Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George. I believe that Joseph Harrison's 4 acres were part of 133 acres that had been owned by Tom Slaton. I believe that the 4 acres passed first into the hands of Mahala B. Slaton, niece of Tom Slaton. I believe that Joseph Harrison then bought the 4 acres from Mahala B. Slaton. |
