There are few individuals of significant interest to my research on this page.  My second great grandfather John Tivis Cox had a son named James Harmon Cox, but I believe that the Harmon Cox on this tax list was a different man.  I do not know who the Harmon Cox and the Benjamin Cox on this page were.  This Harmon was born about 1823 and was from Grainger County.  He was the son of a Benjamin Cox who had died in 1870.  The Benjamin Cox on the tax list was the son of Harmon and the grandson of the Benjamin who had died in 1870.  The Mrs. Rachel Cox on this page was Rachel Douglass, widow of James Harvey Cox Sr., and I'm not aware of any connection between him and my Cox family.

There are few individuals of significant interest to my research on this page.  I do not believe that any of the Coxes on this page were mine.  My Cox ancestors were still all in Greene County in the 1880 census.

There are few individuals of significant interest to my research on this page.  Joseph Martin Hart and Thomas Floyd Hart were the sons of Floyd Hart and Mary Ann Slaton.  Mary was the sister of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton.  Joseph owned 35 acres plus he paid a poll tax.  Thomas owned no land and only paid a poll tax.

I suspect that the 35 acres might have been the property that was later owned by my second great grandparents Joseph (Joe) Harrison and Susan A. Slaton.  The land owned by the Harrison's had many owners both before them and after them, but nevertheless it is still often referred to as "the old Harrison place".  Further research will be required to see if the Joseph Martin Hart property and "the old Harrison place" are the same property.

There are few individuals of significant interest to my research on this page.  William Henry Hart was the son of Floyd Hart and Mary Ann Slaton.  Mary was the sister of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton.  Joseph owned 35 acres plus he paid a poll tax.  William owned 4 acres and paid a poll tax.

I do not have any reason at the present time to suspect that William's 4 acres were connected to any of my other family members.  I do need to get a copy of the deed to see where the property was.

There are a few individuals of significant interest to my research on this page.  In particular, this page contains three entries for the Slaton family, spelled as Slayden by the tax collector.

William J. Slaton who paid taxes 4 acres was the son of my fourth great grandparents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin, and the brother of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton.  Or at least, I strongly suspect that the taxes were paid by William J. Slaton and not his father William Slaydon.  William J. Slaton did not yet own the land in 1880, but was nevertheless paying taxes on it.

F. M. Slayden was Frances Marion (Frank) Slaton who was the son of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton and the brother of my second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton.  Frank did not yet own any land, but he was on the tax rolls to pay a poll tax.

F. M. T. Slayden was a bit of a handwriting error on the part of the tax collector because he omitted an ampersand that is important to understanding the record.  The record should have said F. M. & T. Slayden.  The aforementioned Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and Thomas Fielden Slaton were paying taxes on 100 acres of land that they subsequently purchased.  Frank and Thomas purchased the land in 1886 from George A. Fain, and it remained in the family until the death of Frank's granddaughter Hazel Cox in 2004.
