p.7, line 30, Knox County, Tennessee, 1840 Peters, Neptune 1 male >55, 1 female >55 (free colored) |
I'm including this entry for completeness. I'm assuming that Neptune Peters was a former slave in the Peters family who had been freed, but I have no documentation other than this census entry. At the time of this census entry, my Peters family was in Anderson County and they were not related to the Peters family living in Knox County. As far as the number of individuals, the census entry is blank except to indicate that there was one free colored male over 55 years of age and one free colored female over 55 years of age. |

Daniel Boone (Dan) Letsinger age 20-29 was the common ancestor of all the Letsingers in Anderson County, Tennessee. John Mabry Letsinger age 05-09 was the common ancestor of the Letsingers who are my second cousins. My grandfather's sister Elza Cordelia Peters (Aunt Elzie) married Samuel Mabry (Sam) Letsinger, known to me as Uncle Sam. John Mabry Letsinger age 05-09 was Uncle Sam's grandfather. Daniel's wife was Mary W. (Polly) Shinpaugh age 20-29. |

James Madison (Madison) May was the son of Michael May Sr. and Catharine Detemer. As such, Madison May was the nephew of my fourth great grandmother Margarethe Elizabeth (Peggy) May. Madison May was living next door to Michael Smith 0002101-0011001 who was possibly the father of Madison's wife Frances F. (Fanny) Smith. |

Michael May Sr. was the son of my fifth great grandparents Thomas May Sr. and Maria Catherine Emerich. As such, he was the brother of my fourth great grandmother Margarethe Elizabeth (Peggy) May. Sarah May age 20-29 was not one of the children. Rather, she was Michael's second wife. She was the daughter of George May and Barbara Van Gundy. I do not know if Michael and Sarah were related. It is not totally clear when Michael's first wife Catharine Detemer died and when Michael married Sarah May. Hence, it is not totally clear which children go with which wife. I believe the following is that most likely scenario. Joseph A. M. May and Permelia May were probably Sarah's children. The remaining children were probably Catharine's children. I have not been able to identify the female age 10-14 in any case. She was probably a daughter who died before the 1850 census, and there is no record of her. |

I do not know who Dolly Peters was. But I note that she was the correct age to have been a sister, cousin, or sister-in-law to Tobias and/or Henry Peters. She was too young to have been their mother. I don't know that she was connected to Tobias or Henry (she probably wasn't), but I do want to be sure that she wasn't their mother. |
