1891 Voter Rolls, Knox County, Tennessee

1891 Enumeration of Voting Rolls for Knox County, Tennessee.  These voting rolls can serve as a very poor surrogate for the 1890 census, which was destroyed by fire.

There are two sources for this information.  ancestry.com includes an index for the 1891 Tennessee enumeration of male voters.  In addition, there is a book at the library, Enumeration of male inhabitants of twenty-one years of age and upward, citizens of Tennessee, January 1, 1891, as provided for by an Act of General Assembly of Tennessee, passed January 15, 1891, and approved January 22, 1891, indexed by Sue S. Reed, that covers Anderson, Blount, Knox, and Sevier counties.  The ancestry.com index does not include the ages of the voters.  The book includes images of the original voter rolls, which do include the ages of the voters.

Peters A.C. age 44, white, Dist. 24 p.355
        G.W. age 50, white, Dist. 1 p.132
        L.J. age 25, white, Dist. 8 p.216
        M.J. age 65, white, Dist. 11 p.236
        P.W. age 50, white, Dist. 1, Ward 6 p.51
        T.L. age 28, white, Dist. 11 p.239
        W.B. age 25, white, Dist. 2 p.132

I am tempted to suggest that A. C. Peters was Rev. Adam Clark (Clark) Peters, but he was surely in Morgan County in 1891.

George W. Peters age 50 was the son of Nathaniel Peters and Mary Elizabeth Sharp.  George was not one of mine.

I do not recognize L. J. Peters.

I do not recognize M. J. Peters.  However, I wonder if there was a transcription error, and this was really Newton J. Peters, son of Landon C. Peters and Amie Bennett.  The age matches.  Newton was in Knox County in the 1880 census, and his widow was in Knox County in the 1900 census.  Newton was not one of mine.

I do not recognize P. W. Peters.

Thomas L. Peters age 28 was the son of Newton J. Peters and Margaret Ann Lane.  Thomas was not one of mine.

I do not recognize W. B. Peters.  However, I wonder if there was a transcription errer, and this was really William D. Peters, son of Newton J. Peters.  William was not one of mine.

Catlett C. W. p.23 82 Dist. 1, Ward 3
         G. W. p.23 82 Dist. 1, Ward 3
         Henry p.71 32 Dist. 1, Ward 7, colored
         Jno. R. p.98 44 Dist. 1, Ward 9
  • The entries for C. W. Catlett and G. W. Catlett were probably duplicate.  In any case, I do not know who he was (or who they were, if the entries were not duplicate).
  • I do not know who Henry Catlett was.  The Catletts did own slaves in Sevier County.  Henry was born just before the Civil War started, and probably would have been owned by one of the Catletts in Sevier County.
  • I do not know who John R. Catlett was.  I have numerous John Catletts in my database, but none of them were of the right age to have been 44 years old in 1891.
