James C. (Jim) Bryan and Sarah Ann Gulledge were married on 25 Nov 1839 in McMinn County, so they were newlyweds at the time of the 1840 census. Their first child was Hattie Bryan who was born after the enumeration of the 1840 census. The reason that there were so many people in the household is that Jim's parents both died in September 1839. So the household was still all together with Jim as the oldest son as the head of household. The remaining people in the household were Jim's younger brothers and sisters. James C. (Jim) Bryan was the son of William Bryan and Lucinda (Lucy) Cate. William died on 5 May 1839. Lucy died on 16 Sep 1839. They probably both died of typhoid fever. William Bryan was the son of my fifth great grandparents Peter Bryan and Betty Hubbard. As such, William was the brother of my fourth great grandfather Thomas C. Bryan Sr. Lucy Cate was the daughter of my fifth great grandparents William P. Cate and Mary Enyard. As such, Lucy was the sister of my fourth great grandmother Nancy Cate who married Thomas C. Bryan Sr. Therefore, James C. (Jim) Bryan was the double first cousin of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan. |

Mary M. (Polly) Rucker age 10-14 married Pleasant B. Bryan on 18 Sep 1841 in McMinn County. Pleasant was living next door with his brother Jim (above, line 26). The entire Jim Bryan household consisted of orphans because their parents William Bryan and Lucinda (Lucy) Cate had died in 1839. See the Jim Bryan household for more details. Polly Rucker was the daughter of Mordicai Rucker and Miriam Witt. Miriam Witt was also one of mine because she was the daughter of Nathaniel Witt and Mary Cate. Mary Cate was the daughter of my fifth great grandparents William P. Cate and Mary Enyard. As such, Mary Cate was the sister of my fourth great grandmother Nancy Cate. |
