This census entry requires a lot of correction and explaining. Margaret Ann (Maggie) England age 15 was my second great grandmother. She was really more like 18 years old than 15 years old in 1870, and she was born in North Carolina. She was the daughter of my third great grandparents Jacob England and Dica Ann (Dicy) Smith. Annie age 35 was Dica Ann (Dicy) Smith. This is the only time I have ever seen her name listed as Annie rather than as Dicy. Jacob England died in 1863 in the Civil War. Dicy married second to James Calvin (Calvin) Giles in 1865. The children listed in the census entry above as Mary, Margaret, Eliza, and Amanda were all children of Jacob England and Dicy Smith, and they were all born in North Carolina. Their ages all should have been listed as a year or two older older than they were. Their surnames all should have been listed as England rather than as Giles. Dicie Giles age 2 and William Giles age 4/12 really were children of Calvin Giles and Dicy Smith, and really were born in Tennessee. Jacob England and Dicy Smith had two additional children. One was Myra who was a twin of Harriet, and who apparently died before the 1870 census. The other was Elizabeth who married a Brock, apparently before the 1870 census. |
