1824 Early Surveyor Books, Sevier County, Tennessee

All of downtown Sevierville, including the courthouse, burned on 24 Mar 1856.  Two surveyor books, Vol. 1 (1824-1841) and Vol. 2 (1841-1902) survived the fire because they were in the home of the surveyor.

Bk.1, p.52, No.51 Samuel Henry
Entered: 13 May 1824, Surveyed: 24 Aug 1824.
160 acres on the North side of the French Broad River.
Adjacent: Laining line, John Bures, Allen Bryan.
Survey Chain Carrier: James Henry, Thomas Bryan.

Allen Bryan was Allen S. Bryan Sr., son of my sixth great grandparents Thomas Bryan Sr. and Elizabeth.  As such, Allen was the brother of my fifth great grandfather Peter Bryan.  The chain carrier Thomas Bryan was probably Allen's son Thomas H. Bryan.  The chain carrier James Henry was Samuel's brother.  Both of them were sons of Major Hugh Henry and Mary Long.

Bk.1, p.52, No.52 Allen Bryan.
Entered: 13 May 1824, Surveyed: 24 Aug 1824.
160 acres on the North side of the French Broad River.
Adjacent: Samuel Henry; Bryan ferry Road.
Survey Chain Carrier: James Henry, Allen Bryan.

Allen Bryan was Allen S. Bryan Sr., son of my sixth great grandparents Thomas Bryan Sr. and Elizabeth.  As such, Allen was the brother of my fifth great grandfather Peter Bryan.  Allen was nearly 20 years younger than Peter.  The chain carrier Allen Bryan was probably Allen's son Allen S. Bryan Jr.  The chain carrier James Henry was Samuel's brother.  Both of them were sons of Major Hugh Henry and Mary Long.

Bk.1, p.52, No.99 Benjamin Hufft.
Entered: 26 Jun 1824, Surveyed: 4 Oct 1824.
50 acres on the waters of Dumplin Creek.
Adjacent: Farnell Hester, William Bryan, Peter Bryan deceased.
Survey Chain Carrier: James Henry, Allen Bryan.

Peter Bryan was my fifth great grandfather.  He is known to have been still living in 1823, so this survey entry helps to pin down the date of his death.  He had two early land grants, one on the French Broad River on and one on Dumplin Creek.  His land on Dumplin Creek must have been adjacent to the land of Benjamin Hufft.  William Bryan was Peter's son.  As such, William was the brother of my fourth great grandfather Thomas C. Bryan Sr.  William and Thomas married the sisters Lucy Cate and Nancy Cate.  William moved to McMinn County about 1835, but Thomas remained in Sevier County until his death in 1867.  The chain carrier James Henry was the son of Major Hugh Henry and Mary Long.  The chain carrier Allen Bryan was probably Allen S. Bryan Jr., son of Allen S. Bryan Sr. and Elizabeth Hubbard.

Bk.1, p.144, No.334 Sarah Kelms.
Entered: 6 Jan 1826, Surveyed: 13 Mar 1826.
21 acres on the waters of Dumplin Creek.
Adjacent: Hugh Henry Sr., George Keener, Ellis Loudermilk.
Survey Chain Carrier: John Keener, John Rellans.

I believe that George Keener was George T. Keener 1772-1850 who married Margaret (Peggy) Harris.  I am interested in the Keener family because there were several Keener-Bryan marriages.

George T. Keener's daughter Amanda married William Enyard Bryan.  William was the son of my fourth great grandparents Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate.  As such, William was the brother of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.

William P. Keener's daughter Sarah Ann married Benjamin Allen Bryan.  I do not know how William P. Keener was related to George T. Keener.  Possibly, they might have been brothers.  Benjamin Allen Bryan was the son of Ahaz Bryan Sr. and Mary J. (Polly) Webb.  Ahaz was the nephew of my fifth great grandfather Peter Bryan and the first cousin of my fourth great grandfather Thomas C. Bryan Sr.

George A. Keener married Rachel Narcissus Bryan.  George was probably the son either of George T. Keener or of William P. Keener.

Rachel was the daughter of my fourth great grandparents Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate.  As such, Rachel was the sister of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.

Bk.1, p.340, No.703 George Keener.
Entered: 7 Feb 1826, Surveyed: 30 Jan 1830.
20 acres on the waters of Dumplin Creek.
Adjacent: said Keener 100 acres.
Survey Chain Carrier: Frederick Snyder, Jesse Davis.
