1891 Voters, Sevier County, Tennessee

1891 Enumeration of Voting Rolls for Sevier County, Tennessee.  These voting rolls can serve as a very poor surrogate for the 1890 census, which was destroyed by fire.

There are two sources for this information.  ancestry.com includes an index for the 1891 Tennessee enumeration of male voters.  In addition, there is a book at the library, Enumeration of male inhabitants of twenty-one years of age and upward, citizens of Tennessee, January 1, 1891, as provided for by an Act of General Assembly of Tennessee, passed January 15, 1891, and approved January 22, 1891, indexed by Sue S. Reed, that covers Anderson, Blount, Knox, and Sevier counties.  The ancestry.com index does not include the ages of the voters.  The book includes images of the original voter rolls, which do include the ages of the voters.

Bryan David L. 37 Dist. 5

David L. Bryan, son of Franklin Bryan and Susannah, and probably not from my Bryan line.  He lived first in Wears Valley and then in Sevierville, rather than living in Dumplin Valley.  He was a lawyer.

Bryan Wm. 38 Dist. 5

William Braxton Bryan was the son of Franklin Bryan and Susannah.  The Franklin Bryan family settled first in Wear's Valley, and many of them moved to Sevierville.  They were from North Carolina, and they were apparently not related to my Bryan family.

Sevierville is in Dist. 5.

Bryan J.A. 53 Dist. 6

Joseph A. Bryan, son of Franklin Bryan and Susannah, and probably not from my Bryan line.  He lived in Wears Valley rather than in Dumplin Valley.  He married Elizabeth G. Nichols, who is from my Nichols line.

Bryan P.L. 49 Dist. 6

Peyton L. Bryan, son of Franklin Bryan and Susannah, and probably not from my Bryan line.  He lived in Wears Valley rather than in Dumplin Valley.

Bryan James 33 Dist. 8

James P. (Jim) Bryan, son of my third great grandparents Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate, and brother of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan.

Bryan P. H. 71 Dist. 8

My third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan, son of Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate.

Bryan R. A. 69 Dist. 8

Probably Ahaz W. Bryan, son of my fourth great grandparents Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate and brother of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.  On its face, the theory that R. A. Bryan and Ahaz W. Bryan were the same person seems farfetched.  But Ahaz was still living in Dist. 8 of Sevier County at the time, and there were no other Bryans living in Dist. 8 at the time who were the right age to have been R. A. Bryan.  We need to make two guesses to make R. A. Bryan and Ahaz W. Bryan be the same person.  First, we need to guess that R. A. Bryan's initials were reversed, and that they should have been listed as A. R. Bryan.  Initial reversal was a very common occurrence.  Second, we need to guess that Ahaz's unknown middle name actually began with the letters "Wr".  For example, his name might have been Ahaz Wright Bryan and the enumerator might have been thinking of Wright as if it were spelled Rite.  Spelling a "Wr" name without the "W" was also a very common occurrence.

Bryan Rufus 35 Dist. 8

Rufus A. Bryan, son of William Enyard Bryan and Amanda Keener, and nephew of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.

Bryan Thomas 23 Dist. 8

Thomas L. Bryan, son of my third great grandparents Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate, and brother of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan.

Bryan William 74 Dist. 8

William Enyard Bryan, son of Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate, and brother of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.

Bryan W. E. 40 Dist. 8

Probably my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan, son of Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.  The middle initial is not correct.  But my Will Bryan was the only W. Bryan in Dist. 8 at the time who was the right age to have been the W. E. Bryan in the 1891 enumeration, irrespective of the correctness or incorrectness of the middle initial.  I wonder if the enumerator perhaps got the name and age of William Bryan age 74 and W. E. Bryan age 40 backwards.  The enumeration would make more sense if it was W. E. Bryan age 74 and William Bryan age 40.

Nichols John. 55 Dist. 9

Probably John Nichols, son of John Jesse Nichols and Ester V. Hetty Black, and the grandson of Flayl Nichols and Nancy Ann Hatcher.  If so, then John Nichols age 55 was the grandnephew of my fifth great grandfather John James Nichols Jr.

Bryan Joshua 32 Dist. 12

Joshua C. Bryan, son of my third great grandparents Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate, and brother of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan.

Bryan John 37 Dist. 12

John Greenwood/Greenberry Bryan, son of my third great grandparents Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate, and brother of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan.

  • G. L. Catlett was George L. Catlett, born 22 Apr 1867, son of James Lafayette Catlett and Nancy Malissa Duggan.
  • J. W. Catlett was John W/M. Catlett, born about 1869, son of James Lafayette Catlett and Nancy Malissa Duggan.
  • Henry Catlett was Henry Clay Catlett, born 19 Sep 1861, son of Loftis Henry (Lofty) Catlett and Jane (Jennie) Cowden.
  • James M. Catlett, born 8 Aug 1860, was the son of James P. Catlett and Sarah.
  • James P. Catlett, born 13 Feb 1820, was the son of Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Loveday.
  • Samuel Catlett in Dist. 5 was Samuel (Sam) Catlett, born 7 May 1852, son of Loftis Henry (Lofty) Catlett and Jane (Jennie) Cowden.
  • William S. (Will) Catlett, born 3 May 1817, was the son of Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Loveday.
  • William Catlett "Jr." was probably William A. (Willie) Catlett born 30 Apr 1869, son of Loftus Henry (Lofty) Catlett and Jane (Jennie) Cowden.
  • I can't figure out J. B. Catlett in Dist. 7.
  • Elijah Catlett, born 16 Jun 1856, was the son of Rev. James E. Catlett and Dolly Ann (Anna) Hatcher.
  • I. C. Catlett was Ira C. Catlett, born 26 Nov 1854, son of Rev. James E. Catlett and Dolly Ann (Anna) Hatcher.
  • Samuel Catlett in Dist. 15 was Samuel (Sam) Catlett, born 25 Dec 1859, son of Rev. James E. Catlett and Dolly Ann (Anna) Hatcher.
  • J. E. Catlett in Dist. 15 was almost certainly Rev. James E. Catlett, even though, he died in 1887.  It wouldn't be the first or last time that somebody voted from the grave.  More charitably and more likely, Rev. Catlett was probably already on the voters roll and simply was not correctly purged from the roll between 1887 and 1891.
  • J. H. Catlett in Dist. 15 was John Henry Catlett, born about 1867, son of Rev. James E. Catlett and Dolly Ann (Anna) Hatcher.
