Sevier County, Tennessee Partial Civil War Soldiers List (from north of the French Broad). Source: Aurelia Cate Dawson, Our East Tennessee Kinsmen David Brimer Abraham and Isaac Cate Abraham was the son of Joshua Cate and Elizabeth Tankersly, Corporal in Co. K, 2nd regiment, East TN volunteers. Isaac was Abraham's twin brother, Private Co. B. TN infantry Capt. Joseph Underdown White Underdown Jeff Covington Thomas Smith Ephraim Underwood James Underwood Sam, Porter, and Will Carmichael Wesley Huffaker Larry Thornburgh Edmund Hodges Henry Cate Henry Clay Cate, son of Elisha Porter Cate Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Newman. Hugh Johnson Rev. David Manley Jesse Smith Major Thomas Saffell Ahaz Bryan This is probably the son of Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate. Abner Moore Isaac Keener Al Smith Jacob McCleary Peter, Joshua, Thomas, James, Stewart, and William Bryan Peter Bryan was almost certainly Peter H. Bryan, son of Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate. He was 32 years old when the war started. The only Joshua Bryan in my data base is Joshua C. Bryan, son of Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate. Joshua C. Bryan was three years old when the war started. Hence, the identity of this Joshua Bryan is a mystery. It is unlikely that Thomas Bryan was Thomas C. Bryan Sr. because he would have been too old. His son Thomas C. Bryan Jr. was twenty-five years old when the war started, so it could be him. Another possibility is Thomas G. Bryan, son of William Bryan and Lucinda (Lucy) Cate. Thomas C. Bryan Jr. and Thomas G. Bryan were double first cousins, and it is known that Thomas G. Bryan served in the Civil War. Thomas G. Bryan was a Captain, a prisoner at Vicksburg, and was bushwhacked on his way home and was killed. However, Thomas G. Bryan's parents removed to McMinn County shortly after Thomas was born. So it seems more likely that Thomas G. Bryan would be listed as serving from McMinn County than from Sevier County. James C. Bryan, son of William Bryan and Lucinda (Lucy) Cate is a possibility for James. He was 33 years old at the beginning of the war, but was more likely living in McMinn County or Bradley County than Sevier County at the onset of the war. However, I can't find a James Bryan from Sevier County that looks like a good candidate. The only Stewart Bryan I have in my data base from Sevier County was George Stewart (Stewart) Bryan, son of Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate. This Stewart was born five years after the war was over. However, his name might offer a hint. Perhaps Stewart was Allen S. Bryan, son of Allen S. Bryan Jr. and Elizabeth Underwood. Allen S. Bryan III was born about 1838, which is the correct age to have fought in the Civil War. Perhaps his middle name was Stewart and perhaps like George, he went by his middle name. Peter H. Bryan's granduncle was Peter S. Bryan Sr., and if the "S" was for "Stewart", the name would have been well established in the family. William Bryan, son of William Bryan and Lucinda (Lucy) Cate was the correct age to have fought in the Civil War. But as with the rest of the family, he would have been in McMinn County or Bradley County rather than Sevier County. Similar comments apply to William Bryan, son of Pleasant Bryan and Mary (Polly) Rucker. Dr. William M. Bryan was born in 1819, son of Allen S. Bryan Sr. and Elizabeth McSpadden. I think he would have been in Sevier County when the war broke out.
