1860 Census, Sullivan County, Tennessee

Beaver Creek, Dist. 4, Sullivan County, Tennessee, 14 Jun 1860
page 32b, dwelling number 193, family number 190
Cross Sampson 35 m w farm laborer /$100 TN
        James M. 6 m w TN
Rigsby Mary 60 f w laborer NC cannot R/W
Cross Margaret 37 f w laborer NC
Rigsby Richard 19 m w laborer NC

Sampson Cross was the son of John Cross and Rachel Sampson. John Cross was the son of Abraham Cross and Elizabeth Ensor. So Sampson Cross was the grandnephew of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.

John Cross and Rachel Sampson were married in Carter County, Tennessee, which is adjacent to Sullivan County.

Sampson's first wife was Margaret Rigsby, and their son was James M. Cross. I can't explain the somewhat unusual ordering of the people in this census entry. Mary Rigsby was apparently Margaret's mother. I don't know Mary's maiden name. Richard Rigsy was apparently Margaret's brother.

page 32b, dwelling number 194, family number 191

       Louisa 9 f w TN attended school
       Susan 4 f w TN

I believe this was David A. Cross, who I believe was the son of John Cross and Rachel Sampson. I really don't understand the rest of the census entry.

If David A. Cross was the son of John Cross and Rachel Sampson, then he was the grandnephew of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.

         Mary E. 10/12 f w TN

Thomas Jones (Jones) Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Catherine Cook. Because his name was listed in this census as Thomas C. Cross, I tend to doubt that his name was Thomas Jones Cross and that he was known as Jones Cross (but see the name of his son).

(Jackson Lafayette Cross's father Abraham Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Nancy Ann Lane, and Elijah was the brother of William the drummer.) Jackson Lafayette Cross's wife was Catherine Goodman.

Eleanor Cross was Jackson's sister. Christopher Columbus Cross was Jackson's nephew, the son of Jackson's sister Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cross. Polly Ann apparently married a Cole, but there is considerable confusion. Polly Ann and her children were enumerated at various times with the Cross surname and with the Cole surname.

Reece B. Cross was the son of Jesse Cross and Susannah Hicks. As such, he was the grandnephew of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy. His wife was Harriet Cox. I think Reece was closer to 32 years old in 1860 than he was to 26.

Jesse Powell Cross was the son of John Cross and Rachel Sampson. His wife was Esther Cagle. John Cross was the son of Abraham Cross and Elizabeth Ensor. So Jesse Powell Cross was the grandnephew of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.

George H. Cagle was probably Esther's father. Rachael was probably Jesse's niece, and was probably named for her grandmother Rachel Sampson. But I haven't worked out who Rachael's parents would have been.

David L. Cross age 61 was the son of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy. As such, David was the brother of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross. Alfred moved with his father to Anderson County at some point, probably in 1818. But David married Mary (Polly) Himes age 55 in 1816 and never left Sullivan County.

        Matilda 6/12 f w TN

William A. Cross was the son of Jesse Cross and Susan Hicks. Martha Devault was the daughter of Henry Devault and Matilda Weaver. So Jesse Cross age 2 was named for his grandfather Jesse Cross, and Matilda Cross age 6/12 was named for her grandmother Matilda Weaver. I don't know who Hugh Cross was named for.

William's father Jesse Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Nancy Ann Lane. So William A. Cross was the grandnephew of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.

Abraham was the son of Elijah Cross and Nancy Ann Lane, so Zachariah Cross was the grandnephew of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy. Cross William 13 m w TN

I think this William Cross was the son of George Cross and Elizabeth Lacy. The widow Elizabeth Lacy Cross was enumerated in Dist. 8 with two of her sons, but not with William. The connection to the Carrell (probably Carroll) family is not totally clear. But George Cross deceased was the brother of William Stringfield Cross who married Barbara Carroll. So perhaps these are some of Barbara's kin. For example, perhaps William R. Carroll was Barbara's brother.

        Mary Ann 1/12 f w TN

William Franklin (Billie) Cross was the son of John Cross and Rachel Sampson. John Cross was the son of Abraham Cross and Elizabeth Ensor. So Billie Cross was the grandnephew of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.

Lucinda Rigsby was the daughter of Jonathan Rigsby and Mary (Polly) Sanders.

It seems extrememly likely that Billie Cross was 35 years old in 1860, rather than being 55 years old as suggested by this census entry.
