Captain Richard Tyler's Company of Foot (Tyler's Quarterly, Vol.14, p.49) Wm. Cole Thos Cox Robet. (sic) Cole John Cole Thos. Williamson John Cole John WilliamsonTyler's Company of Foot was composed of 59 men. The ones listed above have surnames which correspond to one or more of my ancestors.
There is no indication at this time that any of the above men were related to any of my ancestors. However, I am interested in the Thomas Cox in the above list. He probably would have been Thomas Cox born about 1730 in Essex County because the Thomas Cox born about 1750 in Essex County would only have been about two years old in 1752.
There is some sketchy evidence that some of the Coxes in Essex County in this time frame may have later moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina. My fourth great grandfather Reuben Cox was born on 6 Mar 1786 in Wilkes County. The given names that show up in the Cox family in the 1790 and 1800 censuses for Wilkes County are Aris, Thomas, David, James, Braxton, and Matthew. These given names seem very similar the given names in the Cox family in Essex County. My best guess right now is that my Reuben Cox was the son of Thomas Cox of Wilkes County, and that Thomas Cox of Wilkes County was from the Essex County, Virginia line. There is much speculation in this guess, but it is something I want to follow up on.
