Marriages, Greebrier County, Virginia

The Peters marriages are from Greenbrier County Marriages 1782-1900 by Larry G. Shuck.  The transcriptions are primarily from ministers' returns, and the original records are stored at the court house in Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, West Virginia.

Henry Peters Sr. and Mary Wiatte were my fifth great grandparents.  They and a number of other families moved from Greenbrier County, Virginia (now Monroe County, West Virginia) to Knox County (now Anderson County), Tennessee in 1797.  The party that moved included Tobias Peters Sr. and Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough. Most people assume that Henry Peters Sr. and Tobias Peters Sr. were brothers, but this is not proven.  In any case, it is not known who either of their respective parents were.  They moved to Tennessee with the Scarbroughs (Scarborough, Scarbro, and Scarboro are variant spellings).  Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough's parents were James Kennedy Scarbrough and Rachel Wood, and they were a part of the party that moved to Tennessee. I have not been able to tie Catharine Peters to either Henry or Tobias.  There are IGI records on the LDS Web site which give the John Thompson and Catherine Peters marriage as 29 Dec 1792 in Montgomery County, Virginia.  The county is different between the IGI records and the Larry Shuck book in any case, but the IGI data make me wonder if 1 Jan 1793 might not be a better date. The Scarbrough marriages are from David Scarbrough.  I suppose they are in Larry G. Shuck's book as well, but I have not double checked them there.
