From Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement of Virginia; Vol 2, pp. 72-73 by Lyman Chalkley
Bryan vs. Bible--O. S. 33; N. S. 11--William Bryan of Rockingham complains that Lewis Bible in 1797 purchased of William's brother, Morgan Bryan, 50 acres adjoining orator. Morgan Bryan became insane, and this suit is to set aside certain contracts of his. William Bryan is a Methodist preacher. James Boys had removed to Kentucky 1803, June. Ezekiel Harrison and James Begs were brothers-in-law of Bryan. Copy of deed, 25th September, 1797, proved in Rockingham September Court, 1797. Lewis Bible and Mary, his wife, to Morgan Bryan. Conrad Custard and James Beggs were brothers-in-law of Morgan. John Lockart testifies he lived in Brock's gap four years. Jacob Custard testifies 9th September, 1801. Jacob Lincoln deposes, 16th October, 1802, that he has known Morgan 30 years. John Bryan was brother of Morgan.
I am related to many of the people in this narrative, but I am descended from none of them.
- Rev. William Bryan was the son of John Bryan. As such, he was the nephew of my sixth great grandfather Thomas Bryan Sr.
- Morgan Bryan was the son of John Bryan. As such, he was the nephew of my sixth great grandfather Thomas Bryan Sr. Morgan's given name is most interesting. It suggests a connection between the family of Cornelius O'Bryan and the family of Morgan Bryan who married Martha Strode. On the one hand, Cornelius O'Bryan was the father of Thomas Bryan Sr. and of John Bryan, so that he was the grandfather of the Morgan Bryan being discussed here in Chalkley's Chronicles. On the other hand, there is no proven connection between Cornelius O'Bryan and Morgan Bryan who married Martha Strode. Cornelius O'Bryan and the elder Morgan Bryan were about the same age and it would be very nice to be able to connect them. Morgan Bryan and Martha Strode are very famous genealogically because they were the grandparents of Rebecca Bryan who married Daniel Boone.
- I do not know who James Boys was. No context is given to connect him to the rest of the story. Perhaps this transcription is in error, and he was the same person as James Begs/Beggs. Also, I wonder about the transcription of Begs/Beggs. Perhaps it should be Boggs.
- Ezekiel Harrison was the husband of Sarah Bryan, daughter of John Bryan. Hence, Ezekiel was the brother-in-law of William Bryan, Morgan Bryan, et. al. In addition, Ezekiel was the son of Thomas Harrison and Sarah Cravens. As such, Ezekiel was the nephew of my sixth great grandfather Jeremiah Harrison.
- Conrad Custard evidently married a daughter of John Bryan, but her name is not known.
- James Beggs/Boggs evidently married a daughter of John Bryan, but her name is not known.
- I'm not sure how Jacob Lincoln fits in with the other Lincolns in Rockingham County, but the Lincoln land and the Bryan land were on across from each other on opposite sides of Linville Creek.
