William Alexander (Alex) Cross was the son of my third great grandparents Alfred Carter Cross and Zipporah Peters. As such, Alex was the brother of my second great grandmother Hulda Asberine Cross. In 1884, Alex became guardian of five Marshall children. The children were his nieces and nephews, having been the children of his sister Arvazine Cross and Arvazine's husband Mark Marshall. Alex posted guardian bond along with D. H. Gibson and T. A. Johnson. I do not know what relationship there might have been between D. H. Gibson and T. A. Johnson and the Cross family. The Marshall family was enumerated in the 1870 census in Anderson County, Tennessee and in the 1880 census in Sebastian County, Arkansas. Mark and Arvazine must have died between 1880 and 1884 because the children were described as orphans in the guardian bond. Mark and Arvazine probably died in Arkansas, although this is not known for sure. It appears that Alex and his wife Martha E. Herrell raised the children thereafter. The list of children from the 1880 census does not match the list of children from the guardian bond. I would assume that additional children were born between 1880 and 1884, and that some of the children from the 1880 census died before 1884. Here is the list of children from the 1880 census.
Here is the list of children from the guardian bond. Note that the clerk wrote in the mother's name as a child (Arvazine Cross), realized his mistake, and crossed through the mother's name.
