Clauda Lee Bryan  (image of death certificate)

Clauda Lee Bryan was the granddaughter of my third great grandparents Peter H. Bryan and Polly Ann Cate. As such, she was the first cousin of my great grandfather William Harley (Harley) Bryan.

My interest in her death certificate is that there is a little mystery which I cannot resolve. There is an infant's grave next to the graves of Peter H. Bryan and Polly Ann Cate which says INFANT OF J.A. AND CLAUDA UNDERWOOD, APRIL 27, 1923. Clauda Lee Bryan married John Amos Underwood, so this should be her infant. However, her death certificate confirms that she died April 7, 1919. The dates seem impossible to reconcile. Perhaps the infant's stone was placed years after the death, and the infant's date of death is incorrect. Another possibility is that John Amos Underwood's second wife was Clauda's cousin Lola Helen Bryan.  Perhaps it was her infant.

Arguing for the likelihood that the infant was Clauda's is the fact that she was raised by her grandparents Peter H. Bryan and Polly Ann Cate.  So it seems that she might well have buried her infant next to the grandparents who raised her.  However, in general it does not seem possible to resolve the mystery.
