Who is it? | Generations Removed | Relationship in Genealogy | Common Ancestors |
---|---|---|---|
sibling of your parent | one | aunt or uncle | your grandparents |
sibling of your grandparent | two | grandaunt or granduncle | your great grandparents |
sibling of your great grandparent | three | great grandaunt or great granduncle | your great great grandparents |
sibling of your great great grandparent | four | great great grandaunt or great great granduncle | your great great great grandparents |
The "relationship in genealogy" column differs from common everyday usage. In everyday usage, the sibling of your grandparent is usually called a great aunt or a great uncle. The sibling of your great grandparent is usually called a great great aunt or a great great uncle. Etc. So in everyday usage, the number of "greats" does not match between grandparents and grandaunts and granduncles. But with the genealogical style, the number of greats does match. This is a Good Thing.
