Census: 1891, Sevier County, Tennessee. Bryan R. A., 69, Dist. 8. There is a certain amount of guesswork in associating this 1891 male voters enumeration with Ahaz W. Bryan. There were no other Bryans in Dist. 8 of Sevier County who were the correct age, and Ahaz himself was not enumerated unless this was his entry. We need to guess that the initials were inverted so that it should have been A. R. Bryan rather than R. A. Bryan. We also need to guess that Ahaz's middle name was a "Wr" name such as "Wright", which was often misspelled as something such as "Rite". (RGB)

Death: 27 March 1893, age 72, [Sevier County], [Tennessee].116

Burial: about 28 March 1893, at Bryan-Drinnen-Cate Cemetery Kodak, Sevier County, Tennessee.116 Grave marker: Ahaz Bryan, 25 Sep 1820 - 27 Mar 1893.

Ahaz was a miller. There are secondary sources that report that he owned a mill in Wears Valley. However, he lived in Dumplin Valley, and it seems more likely that his mill was in Dumplin Valley. There are records of Ahaz receiving reparations for stolen property at his mill during the Civil War.

Ahaz W. Bryan and Margaret Callahan Marriage: 24 October 1842, Dumplin Baptist Church, Jefferson County, Tennessee.45,139,140

Missing from census: 1840,. Margaret's mother died in 1823, a year after she was born. She was born in North Carolina, and she was married in Jefferson County, Tennessee in 1842. Her father Samuel Callahan cannot be located in any census in Tennessee or North Carolina in 1840. Samuel's date of death is unknown, and Margaret may have been living with relatives at the time of the 1840 census.

BU states that it was reported that Sarah was the only daughter and does not list a son. Roberta Pierson lists both Sarah and Samuel Thomas.

Ahaz W. Bryan-101 and Margaret Callahan-539 had the following children:

Ahaz W. Bryan and Elizabeth Smith Marriage: 17 January 1890, Sevier County, Tennessee.142

Elizabeth Smith138, daughter of [father of Elizabeth) Smith and (mother of Elizabeth Smith),. Birth: 1831, Georgia.

Residence: 23 February 1895, Thorn Grove, Knox County, Tennessee. She received a letter from her daughter, addressed to Thorn Grove, Tennessee.

Death: 1916, age 85,.

She drew the Civil War pension of Ahaz Bryan until her death in 1916. There's a minor irony because her first husband Squire Joseph Sanders was a Confederate soldier. She married Ahaz Bryan late in life, and he was a Union soldier.
