Joy James, 61, went to be with our Lord on Saturday. Nov. 20, 2004, after a long and courageous battle with breast and brain cancer. Joy was a legal secretary for more than 40 years. She worked for the late Frank Gleason of Gleason, Davis and Dunn for many of those years. She later worked for John Stophel. She ended her career at Harriss, Hartman, where she was secretary to Jim Aaron and David Allen. She was an active member of Simpson United Methodist Church in Rossville. She was a member of United Methodist Women and the Outreach Sunday School Class where she served as treasurer for many years. She especially loved the singing every Sunday morning in the Outreach Class. Her favorites were "Love, Mercy and Grace" and "The Awakening Chorus." Joy was a 1961 graduate of Rossville High School. She served as an officer in the Rossville High School Alumni Association for many years. She was on the RHS Sports Hall of Fame committee each of its 11 years. She was a loving member of the Rah-Rah's, a group of 1961 graduates who got together frequently and celebrated their 60th birthdays with a party. Members of the group included Carolyn Brown Shadrick, Diane Jones Ball, Shirley Justice Rhinehart, Jackie Walden Odum, Beverly Story Hise and Gloria McCurdy Bevil. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Tom and Aline Steele. Survivors include three children, Rhonda and Craig Miller of Chattanooga, Lance James of Flintstone, Ga., and Brent and Chardel James of Chattanooga; her best friend and companion, Pete Moore of Rossville; sister, Ardith and Ed Ball of LaFayette, Ga.; and brother, Tom Steele Jr. of Bremerton, Wash. Joy's family would like to extend a special thanks to all the doctors and medical staffs who did so much to help her through her illness: Dr. Edward Arrowsmith, Dr. Eric Ellis, Dr. Maurice Rawlings, Dr. Walter Boehm, NHC of Fort Oglethorpe and Hospice of Chattanooga. The family also would like to thank all the special friends who did so much to help Joy throughout her life and her illness. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with the Rev. Braxton Cotton and the Rev. Billy Kurtz officiating. Interment will be in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park. Members of the Outreach Class and of the Rah-Rah's will be serving as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway.
