Heart Disease Kills Man Once Prominent in Washington

Thomas Barbour Bryan, of Chicago, died suddenly of heart disease at mid-night at the home of his niece Mrs. Whitehead, 1601 I Street Northwest.

Mr. Bryan was one of the Commissioners of the District of Columbia from 1875 until 1878, and was prominent for several years in Washington affairs. He was born in Alexandria, Virginia, December 22, 1828; graduated at Harvard and practiced law in Cincinnati until 1852, when he removed to Chicago, where he lived until his death, with the exception of his term of service in Washington.

He was President of the Chicago Sanitary Fair, which netted more than $300,000 for the Union soldiers during the war. He was a member of the Union Defence Commission, and was President of the Chicago Soldier’s Home from 1865 to the time of his death. He was the founder and owner of Graceland Cemetery, Bryan Hall and the Fidelity Safe Depository, in which millions were save in the Chicago fire in 1871. He was one of the most active promoters and Vice President of the Columbian Exposition.

Mr. Bryan came to Washington on November 7 last, and has been visiting at the home of his niece. He was ill only a few days. He is survived by a son Charles Page Bryan; United States Minister to Portugal, and one daughter Miss Bryan, who was with him at the time of his death.

Plans for the funeral have not been perfected, but it has been decided the interment will be in Washington.
