Elizabeth Cate Manly and William Jackson Bryan give Lucy E. Bryan's birth date as 1 December 1831. Roberta Pierson gives the birth date as 1838. The 1838 date corresponds to the census data. I am taking the liberty of listing the birth date as 1 December 1838 pending further research. The December birth date indicates that Lucy's birthday would not yet have occurred when the census was taken in 1860 and 1870, which is why the birth year is 1838 rather than 1839. Further evidence that the birth year is 1838 is that Lucy was 12 years old at the 1850 census. (RGB)

The following is from Fred Wyrick.

William joined Co. G, 43rd Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, Mounted CSA. Co. G mustered in @ Mossy Creek on 10/19/1861. His commanding Officer was a Col. J. W. Gillespie. His rank was "private". William was captured @ Vicksburg, Mississippi June 1863. Paroled he came home promising not to fight anymore.

William re-enlisted @ Rogersville, Tennessee in 1864. He was wounded @ Wythville, Virginia in the early Spring of 1865. His unit was @ Blacksburg, Virginia when General Lee surrendered @ Appomattox, Virginia in April 1865. His Unit was ordered to Knoxville and was there administered the Oath of Allegiance by Col. James Carter.

William's brother Thomas Drinnen also joined the 43rd Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, Mounted CSA. He was in Co. A. We don't know if they joined together in 1861 or if Thomas joined later. We also don't know if Thomas was captured @ Vicksburg and paroled and did not fight further or not, or if he fought to the end of the war. Thomas also survived the war and returned home.

William's sister Mary Jane Drinnen married Elisha Porter Cate on 9/15/1857. Elisha P. Cate also served in the Confederate Army. I have been unable to obtain more information other than the TNGenWeb.org Web Site that lists him as a Confederate Veteran.

All are buried in the Bryan/Drinnen/Cate Cemetery off of East Dumplin Valley Road in Sevier County.
