She was Elizabeth Cate Manning's grandmother who inspired Elizabeth Cate Manly's genealogy endeavors. Elizabeth Cate Manly refers to her as BBJ - Bettie Bryan Julian.

A treasured piece of writing, saved from a Cleveland paper printed over one hundred years ago, simply says:

"Married on the 21st of May, at the close of the commencement exercises of Chatata Seminary, by the Rev. K.C. Atkis, Prof. J.A. Julian to Miss S.E. Ryan, both of this county - May 29, 1874".

The family Bible has "in the presence of 1500 witnesses", so it was a big wedding! The wedding attendants included "Cousin Bill" Bryan, Minnie Horton, Alice McFarland, Isham Julian, Sallie Julian, Venie Yearwood, Lena Crockett, Bill Rickett, Watt Cate, Wm. A. Cate, Julia Horton, Lizzie Black. The latter three were still alive in 1930, when BBJ wrote a ltter telling of her wedding. It was deep sorrow to her that her bosom friend, Gussie Bledsoe Parker, could not be an attendant. She was already a widow, Calvin Parker having died of "consumption". In those days married persons did not serve as wedding attendants. Sallie Julian and Alice Bryan, young sisters of the groom and bride, carried lamps.

The first home of the Julians, where their son Alaric and their daughter Beulah were born, was a little house across Little Chatata Creek from the Seminary. (No doubt housing was a part of the teachers' stipend.) They then spent a year or two in Sale Creek, Hamilton County, where both taught. Beulah was kept during the day by a Mrs. Patterson, in whose house they had rooms.

They then lived at Chatata, where James A. Julian was associated with has brother,
