Bruce Cox, Sr. told me that Sam Shannon, Sr. and Nellie Cox knew each other in high school. He said that the last of Sam’s people died in the last few years. Sam worked for Merita Bread Company and was later transferred to Birmingham. Alabama. where they lived until they both died. There are many Shannons buried at Johnson Cemetery in Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee. (Sallie Cox)

Cannie Shannon Cooper told me that during the Depression Sam and Nellie lived with Granny Cox and that Sam drove a bread truck. She said so many people were out of work during the depression that the job with the bread company kept him and Nellie from starving to death. (Sallie Cox)

After Granny Cox died. Nell and Sam stayed in her house until it sold. Sam Shannon, Sr.'s family was from the Appalachian mountains. (Sallie Cox)

Connie Shannon (wife of Sam Shannon, Jr., Nellie’s only child) told me this story: Granny Cox used to visit Nell every summer in Birmingham and Connie would go next door to visit with her.
