Notes from Ann (Scarbrough) Perrine, granddaughter of Cordie Cole: Cordie never had a life to call her own it seems. She was always attached to someone else, never being in the position to make decisions. She was a very religious person, a very good person in my memory. She never told me that her name was Cordelia ( or was it just Cordie?) The census sometimes called her Cordelia. She stood very straight and watched her diet. She was the only person in the church to kneel to pray ( Had her Cole or England family been Episcopalian?) Her dresses were long, her shoes high top [Today, she would have been in style, but then she dressed very differently than those families around us. As an adult I feel that she always tried to do the right thing and was generous to others in her thoughts. She was very pretty even at her oldest age. I would like to hear any storied any of your relatives have about her. If I wrote a book I would make her a central character and let here make decisions about the direction of her life. Funny thing, she may have been happiest doing just what she was doing. That was the way things were back then, and perhaps now.

Another note from Ann (Scarbrough) Perrine, granddaughter of Cordie Cole: Never heard whether Ida and Cordie were identical twins. Cordie was very tall and thin. Watcher her weight. Drank a cup of hot water every morning and every evening. Was aware to stand straight. She was so strong on being fair to people. Not self-righteous. She had brown hair (very fine and thin); wore it pulled back into a small bun in the back. Wore long dresses with an apron to keep it clean unless company was coming or she was going to church. I remember her high top shoes. Oh! How she did love reading! Dreamed of Wisconsin and the beautifully decorated barns. She also liked Vermont and sugar gathering time. Don't think she ever went farther than Lenoir City or Knoxville. If I were to ever write a novel I'd make that family the central characters, and those Cole sisters would have a fantastic life. So would Vesta. Can you imagine what it must have been like for her having to have her girls somewhere else?

20. Undertaker - Jno F. Booth, Oliver Springs, Tenn.

The informant was his daughter, Flossie Scarbrough, wife of George Victor (Vick) Foster. The death certificate reports that he was buried at New Hope, but his tombstone is at the Scarbrough Cemetery and there is no stone for him at the New Hope Cemetery. He was a member of Liberty Masonic Lodge, Scarbrough, Anderson County, Tennessee.

Ross was a farmer and a miller. His farm was below the guard gate that was built in Scarbrough on Bethel Valley Road leading towards X-10, now known as Oak Ridge National Lab. After his death, the farm and the mill were run by his son R. E. Scarbrough. Irene Peters Tarver remembers going to the mill to have their corn ground. Jo Hackworth Peters remembered that Ross's mother-in-law Vesta Clay England Cole Scarbrough lived in Ross's home for the last few years of her life, and that Vesta took long walks along Bethel Valley Road.

Cordelia Rene (Cordie) Cole-3222 and Tolbert Ross (Ross) Scarbrough-3225 had the following children:

i.

Julia Odessa (Dessie) Scarbrough249.
Birth: 1 January 1891, Scarbrough, Anderson County, Tennessee.
Parents: Tolbert Ross (Ross) Scarbrough and Cordelia Rene (Cordie) Cole.
Death: 24 December 1892, age 1, Scarbrough, Anderson County, Tennessee. The 1900 census says that Cordie had three children, two living. The two living children were Flossie and Cassie. The following narrative from Ann Scarbrough Perrine is the best explanation that we have as to the third child: I remember grandma Cordie telling me that a child was born named Dessie (Deccie)(Descye) ?? While grandma was cooking the baby or child? crawled in the fireplace. She was able to get the child out but it had stopped breathing. I do not remember if the child was a boy or girl. It seems the girls' names rhymed, Flossie, Cassie, and I always thought Dessie was a girl too. I notice that my sister Georgia has this written: "Between Cassie and Roy, a boy was born who died or was born dead." I don't know if this boy would be the baby(child) who crawled in the fireplace.

Subsequent to the above discussion, Georgia Scarbrough Smith provided exact birth and death dates for Julia Odessa (Dessie) Scarbrough, transmitted to me via Ann Scarbrough Perrine. We have been unable to find Dessie's grave. She likely was buried at the Scarbrough Cemetery in Anderson County, Tennessee but no stone can be found.

[male infant] Scarbrough250.
Birth: between 1900 and 1906.
Parents: Tolbert Ross (Ross) Scarbrough and Cordelia Rene (Cordie) Cole.
Death: between 1900 and 1906, age 0. He died very young or was stillborn. His birth and death had to be 1900/1906. Cordie was listed in the 1900 census as having had three children of whom two were still living. Dessie had died before the 1900 census, so this child had to have been born after 1900. We know that this child was born between Cassie in 1895 and Roy Earl in 1906, so this child had to have been born between 1900 and 1906.
