Jean Price Peters Ensor, 95, passed away on Mother's Day, May 8, 2011, at her home in Woodland Terrace, Cary, N.C. At her direction, her family will have a private memorial service. Jean was born Oct. 9, 1915, in Burrville to the late P.M. Price and Ellen Bowden Price. Jean donated her body to the UNC Medical School, to provide one last bit of educational help to beginning medical students. She earned her undergraduate degree from TTU and graduate degree from UT, both summa cum laude. She taught algebra, physics and chemistry in Putnam County schools for 30 years, retiring in 1980 to help manage Ensor's Book Store on Cookeville's West Side. In her career as a teacher she was elected teacher of the year, president of the Putnam County Education Association, and delegate to the National Education Meeting. She was the science fair sponsor and had many winners on all levels, even International. She belonged to The American Auxiliary of University Women, the Business and Professional Club, was a delegate to the national conventions and was elected Woman of the Year. She was an active member of The President's Club of TTU and a former member of the Faculty Ladies Club. She was a former secretary of the Retired Teachers Association. Jean also held the office of president of The Senior Neighbors. She was always involved in church work at every level of her life as a student, children's teacher, Sunday school superintendent and teacher of adult Bible classes at the Cookeville First United Methodist Church. Jean was elected Queen Mother at FUMC in 1985. In the document Jean prepared for her children to use at her own memorial service, she stated that she considered her greatest accomplishments were: To have had two good marriages; to have had three precious children who have done so well they have exceeded her; that she was successful in helping students improve their potential to be more successful ... she had students and their parents tell her that through her assistance, they were able to earn college degrees or that she set them on the right path in life; and that she had provided good leadership, both in the classroom, in the church and community. Her family includes two sons, James Wayne Peters of Smyrna, Ga., and John Thomas Peters of Cary; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husbands, A.B. Peters and Allison Ensor Sr.; a daughter, Dr. June Peters Almy; two grandchildren; four brothers; and four sisters. Her wishes for memorial donations were to the Dr. June Peters Almy Scholarship Fund for Nurses at TTU, The American Cancer Society and Hospice.
