31. Mahala B Slaton⁵¹ appeared in the census in 1860 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Mahala Slaton perhaps did and perhaps did not appear in the 1860 census. Her father Joseph Flippin Slaton was enumerated with himself and an infant M.E. Slaton age 1/12 being the only family members listed. However, it seems likely that the census entry should have listed Joseph's wife M.E. Slaton age 19 and Joseph's daughter Mahala Slaton age 1/12. It appears that the enumerator kept the initials of Joseph's wife, but gave his wife the age of his daughter.
She was born on 2 August 1860 in [Jefferson County], Tennessee. Mahala's death certificate says that she was born on 2 Aug 1861. But the 1860 census shows an M.E. Slaton age 1/12. So I believe that she was born 2 Aug 1860, and that she was Mahala E. Slaton. (RGB) She appeared in the census in 1870 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.
