When Haskel died, his daughter Ollie Paralee Free McCampbell was was notified by way of a penny post card mailed by a neighbor. It arrived ten days after Haskel's death. (William Maurice (Jack or Bill) McCampbell.) Hazel Cox's family history does not include the given name for Haskel Free, just his surname. However, Curtis Slaton sent me an old photograph of the Slaton family taken about 1897. The occasion of the photograph was a funeral. The photograph consists primarily of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and his children and grandchildren. In addition, Frank Slaton's father Thomas Fielden Slaton is in the picture. The legend on the photograph gives the names of all the people in the picture. Also, the legend says that there is a chair which is draped in black in memory of the infant son of Rebecca and Haskel Free who had just died. Hazel Cox's history lists an unnamed infant son of Rebecca Slaton and her husband Mr. Free. Subsequent research with cemetery records has shown that the "infant son" who died in 1897 was in fact an infant daughter named Mary F. Free. (RGB) Joseph Haskel Free moved out west after his first wife died in 1903, first to California and then later to Oregon. His children were left with their grandparents. In moving to California, he was following his brother-in-law John Thomas Slaton. (RGB) His daughter Ollie Paralee Free McCampbell had great affection for him, but most of the Slatons hated him. They figured he abandoned his wife and sickly children when he went west with Uncles John and Walker Slaton, leaving them to the care of their Grandpa Slaton and, largely, to Uncle Port. Uncle John became a prosperous farmer in Imperial Valley and Uncle Walk did okay in the oil fields in Oklahoma. Haskel became a carpentar in Portland, Oregon. Haskel came back home to Tennessee twice after he left. He was on the eastbound train that wrecked in New Market on Sept 22 1904. He was back again in 1922 just before his daughter Ollie married Walter B. McCampbell. His second wife Nettie Jane Free -- visited Tennessee in 1938. She and my Ollie wrote regularly all those years and Ollie always called her Grandma. (William Maurice (Bill or Jack) McCampbell). Rebeca Slaton and Joseph Haskel (Haskel) Free had the following children:
